Research DataVault¶
RCS’s Research DataVault service provides competitively priced, resilient storage that allows users to store large amounts of infrequently accessed research data. Its features have been designed to balance the need to protect data in accordance with its value and longevity against prohibitive costs.
Key service features¶
Cheapest available file storage
Physical replication of data across multiple sites
Designed for long-term storage, not performance
Encrypted file transport
Costs¶
Storage is pre-booked on a per-TB, per-year project basis. Storage licenses can be extended or expanded when matched with a purchase order.
How to Access¶
RDV is accessible from all CSD3 login nodes, as well as via SFTP gateways for access over SFTP.
Note
From 1 November 2022, all CSD3 systems will require MFA (MultiFactor Authentication) in order to login, this includes access to storage projects via the SSH Gateways. For more information see the full page outlining the steps required - MultiFactor Authentication (MFA)
Access to projects can be configured by the data owner individually via the RCS Servicedesk if default access needs to be modified.
Tip
Check out the Best Practice guide for information on how to best use RDV.
Research Cold Storage to Research DataVault Migration¶
From 1 April 2026 we began migrating users and projects from Research Cold Storage to Research DataVault. You will be contacted when your project will be migrated. All reasonable efforts will be made to try to maintain access to your data for you.
